SUMMARY:DUS
DESCRIPTION:Seminar on Dense Urban Studies\n\n\n\nFor mid-career leaders\, this 2-week program helps participants understand the complex make-up and critical issues of operating in dense urban areas and megacities. \n\n\n\nThe Future is Now\n\n\n\nThe Institute for Defense and Business (IDB) offers our Dense Urban Studies Strategic Broadening Seminar (DUS SBS)\, a two-week educational and experiential learning opportunity for participants to explore and understand the critical infrastructure\, urban geography\, and flow of cities to better plan for the future fight by using the megacity of New York as a living laboratory. As the world’s population continues to become increasingly concentrated in megacities\, this broadening seminar is designed to increase awareness and planning considerations for urban operations. \n\n\n\nTo effectively demonstrate the size and scale of these urban operations\, the IDB brings together academia\, the interagency\, private sector and the military to share and study the “megacity system” for broader understanding and situational awareness. This seminar is specialized at the O-3/4 level including Warrant Officers and Senior Non-Commissioned Officers (Bachelor’s Degree Preferred). Civilians of an equivalent career level are encouraged to participate. \n\n\n\nView program details

SUMMARY:“Whole-of-Nation” Response to Crisis: Who is at the Table? Who is in Charge?
DESCRIPTION:As the United States begins to grasp the impact of COVID-19\, experts across industries are beginning to evaluate our ability to respond effectively to national crises. This evaluation\, and the identification of best practices\, is an exceptionally difficult task due to the sheer number of actors involved. \n\n\n\n\n\nAs the United States begins to grasp the impact of COVID-19\, experts across industries are beginning to evaluate our ability to respond effectively to national crises. This evaluation\, and the identification of best practices\, is an exceptionally difficult task due to the sheer number of actors involved. \n\n\n\nActors such as federal agencies\, state and local governments\, non-governmental organizations\, and even faith-based institutions all bring their own expertise\, resources\, and operating styles that often lead to haphazard results. Moreover\, current protests around the country have highlighted social policy issues that go hand-in-hand with crisis management. \n\n\n\nWe have brought together a panel of distinguished leaders to discuss observations from the current coronavirus pandemic and the challenges that arise from our “Whole-of-Nation” response. \n\n\n\nPanelists include: \n\n\n\n\nGEN (R) Vince Brooks\, IDB Executive Fellow and former Commander U.S. Forces Korea\n\n\n\nLTG (R) Kathleen Gainey\, Co-Lead for the National Coalition to Support COVID-19 Frontline Responders under Operation Gratitude and former Director of Logistics\, Joint Staff J4\n\n\n\nMr. Jeff Orner\, President of Arlington Ridge Consulting\, LLC and former Chief Readiness Support Officer\, U.S. Department of Homeland Security\n\n\n\n\nThe panel took place on Thursday\, June 18th at 3:00 PM EST. \n\n\n\nA recording of the panel can be found on the IDB YouTube Channel:

SUMMARY:IDB DEI Panel – “The Next Frontier: Diversity\, Equality and Inclusion”
DESCRIPTION:As you know\, diversity\, equality\, and inclusion (DEI) is on everyone’s minds in both the public and private sectors. The definition of DEI is evolving as we speak\, and we believe it is critical that our communities talk and think about how DEI impacts organizations and individuals. We would like to formally invite you to attend the first in a series of DEI panels hosted by the IDB. Led by leading experts in the field\, this will be a valuable and thought-provoking discussion on the implementation of DEI and the many obstacles that can limit its effectiveness. We are certain that this will be a highly impactful learning opportunity. This complimentary webinar will take place on Friday\, April 30th at 11:00 am EST.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nModerator\n\n\n\n\nDr. Albert Segars \n\n\n\nDr. Albert H. McDew\n\n\n\nUSAF (Ret)\, former Commander of the United States Transportation Command and current IDB Executive Fellow \n\n\n\n\nPreliminary Reading\n\n\n\nDiversity\, Equality and Inclusion: A Survey of Innovative Organizations \n\n\n\n\n\nMr. Anselm A. Beach\n\n\n\n\n\nDr. Albert H. Segars\n\n\n\n\n\nDownload: “The Next Frontier of Diversity\, Equality and Inclusion” \n\n\n\nAbstract \n\n\n\nOne of the most challenging issues facing organizations is the achievement of diversity\, equality and inclusion (DEI). Importantly\, DEI represents a larger and more ambitious goal than achieving some or all of its component parts. There is a synergistic aspect of such efforts that is identifiable when it exists. Yet\, somehow\, it can be elusive to achieve. In fact\, many organizations have launched organizational revitalization efforts under the banner of DEI only to find that the benefits\, employee appreciation\, and momentum fall short of expectations. Perhaps these efforts are clumsy due to a lack of “know how” or unclear objectives. It is also possible that such efforts lack the ambition\, vision\, creativity\, and energy that is typically given to launching new products or pioneering new marketplaces. Our research suggests that innovative organizations apply a level of energy and zeal to DEI that matches the search for the next big idea. We also find that there are four identifiable values of DEI that guide these organizations. These values are representation\, participation\, application\, and appreciation. Along with the values\, there are seven guiding principles that are used to shape and drive their efforts. Both the values and principles are actionable and can serve as a way forward for any organization seeking to gain more from their DEI initiatives. \n\n\n\nThe Institute for Defense & Business delivers custom-designed education and research programs that present stimulating ideas to diverse public and private sector participants in an academic setting to foster collaboration and achieve excellence and innovation. Our expert faculty share new ideas\, new tools and new approaches.  But it is the diverse mix of participants that take these concepts to the next level.  IDB programs attract participation from private industry\, government agencies\, the military\, non-governmental organizations\, and international organizations.  By examining shared challenges\, participants exchange best practices and develop actionable insights that help their organizations excel today and into the future. Participants leave IDB programs with new job skills\, strategic insights\, business acumen\, and a broader professional network.   Their resulting improved performance helps them reach the next level in their career and lead their organization toward greater success. \n\n\n\nHistory In 2001\, IDB delivered its first educational programs in logistics and technology.  These flagship programs\, developed and delivered in partnership with the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill’s Kenan-Flagler Business School were custom-built for the DoD’s Center of Excellence in Logistics and Technology (LOGTECH)\, a center established through Congressional Directive to support the spread of logistics best practices\, processes\, and technology across the DoD. As the reputation of LOGTECH programs grew\, IDB continued to partner with organizations across the defense enterprise\, developing programs to address their unique educational objectives. \n\n\n\nIDB Today In addition to custom-built educational programs and research\, today the IDB offers several open-enrollment programs for professionals at all career levels\, ranging from a few days to four weeks and multiple residencies across several months. The IDB portfolio is continuously adjusting to meet the needs of the organizations we serve.  It currently includes programs on logistics\, supply chain and life cycle\, complex industrial leadership\, innovation\, and continuous process improvement.  The portfolio also includes strategic broadening seminars for national security and policy\, cybersecurity\, dense urban areas\, information operations\, and enterprise resource planning. \n\n\n\nThe panel took place on Friday\, April 30th at 11:00 AM EST. Please see the recording of the panel below.
