Fostering education, collaboration, and innovation across all sectors of the defense enterprise

The Institute for Defense and Business (IDB) provides custom executive education programs for the military, government, and private sector in the areas of logistics, life cycle issues, leadership and organizational transformation, strategic studies, and economic reconstruction and stability operations. Bringing together leaders from the  Department of Defense, other government agencies, and the private sector in a non-attribution academic setting provides a powerful catalyst for the exchange of information and best practices.

The IDB programs range from week-long residency programs to a 2-year online/in-residence MBA with a concentration in logistics. Programs are available for participants at all levels, from early-career to flag officers/senior executives.

From 1997-2013,  IDB programs have provided over 5,000 participants with extraordinary  educational experiences featuring faculty from top national universities, U.S. and foreign government leaders, military flag officers, and experts and executives from the private sector.

The IDB is a 501(c)(3) N.C. non-profit research and education institute located in Chapel Hill, North Carolina.  The IDB was established in 1997 by the state of North Carolina and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill as an independent legal entity.  It has a self-perpetuating board of directors chaired by former North Carolina Governor James G. Martin.
